FR-44 Insurance in Jacksonville
What is FR-44 Insurance and why would someone need to have it?
FR-44 Insurance is similar to an SR-22 Insurance certificate that you file with the state after a conviction. FR-44 however, is required after a DUI conviction and has higher limits than an SR-22 certificate. It is typically known as DUI Insurance.
Once you are convicted of a DUI, your driver’s license will be suspended. To reinstate your license, you will be required to get an FR-44 form through your qualified insurance agent. Your agency will know by you asking for an FR-44 form, that your license has been suspended and you will be deemed “high risk” by your insurance company. Your car insurance rates will increase by double due to your new high-risk status. DUI convictions are considered quite serious; thus, the liability requirements are significantly more than an SR-22 insurance.
On February of 2008, Florida required FR-44’s in place of SR-22’s if you were convicted of a DUI anytime after 2/2/2008. Florida drivers convicted of a DUI were required to increase their liability limits.
The liability requirements are in the amount of 100/300/50.
- $100,000/per person bodily injury liability coverage
- $300,000/per accident bodily injury liability coverage
- $50,000 property damage liability
How Long Do I Need to Carry FR-44 Insurance?
The length of time needed to carry FR-44 Insurance can vary depending on your situation. However, a general rule of thumb is three years from the date of your DUI conviction. Not only will you need to have three consecutive years of coverage, but you cannot have any lapses in coverage during those three years. Otherwise, your driver’s license will not be reinstated, and you will need to start your three-year period all over again. Unlike an SR-22 where you can pay your premiums in monthly installments, an FR-44 you will need to pay in six-month installments.
What is FR-44 Non-Owners Insurance?
If you have been convicted of a DUI and you do not own a car, but you will be operating someone else’s vehicle you will need an FR-44 Non-Owner policy. A Non-Owner Policy or Named-Operator Liability Policy is different from your standard FR-44 in that it does not offer comprehensive coverage or collision since it is not your vehicle. It does cover bodily injury, property damage liability coverage, (PIP), uninsured motorist coverage. FR-44 Non-Owners Insurance is much cheaper than a standard FR-44 policy.
